Clothing Description: The young Miraluka dresses mostly in white, archaic clothing, the type of which isn't uncommon among his people. The
primary piece of the outfit is a long white tunic that is split down the middle on the bottom half, which is separate from the top half by a reddish brown,
girdle-like belt flanked by twin red sashes. A sling on his left side holds his lightsaber hilt, and a holster on the left half of his abdomen holds twin
knives. The ensemble is completed by twin gauntlets made of common metal, a pair of boots that are the same color as his belt, and a travel bag he wears on his
back for carrying various objects.
General Description: Ailles Konn does not have any eyes.
That's just something that needed to be stated before too many questions were asked. He doesn't have an eye shape, an eye color, or an
eye anything. Other than that, he's a fairly average young man. Weighing in at 195 pounds and standing at a height of 5'9", Ailles is a healthy
enough boy. But, as one might guess based on his size, he doesn't have a whole lot of strength. While that lean boy could probably run pretty quickly and
bob and weave effectively if attacked, he wouldn't be doing any heavy lifting or throwing any decent punches. That's cool, though; Ailles isn't
much of a scrapper anyway.
How attractive the boy is depends largely on the perception of the one beholding him at any given time. There's certainly a mysterious air
about him due to the fact that he never shows his eyes (or, in his case, his lack thereof). He has thin lips, thick eyebrows, jet-black hair, and mid-length,
rounded nose with fairly wide nostrils. His skin is of a darker shade than that which most near-humans are known to possess; it can accurately be described as
similar in color to common dirt. He still has yet to grow any real facial hair, instead bearing a bit of stubble on and around the bottom of his jaw. But, most
of this is not really important, is it? After all, it isn't often that a person will ever really see Ailles's face.
One of the few things that he knows of the galaxy is that a Miraluka is better off hiding his or her true origin. This is why Ailles dresses the
way that he does, wearing a fairly large hood that covers the top half of his face and casts a shadow over the remainder (the highest part of his face that is
clearly visible is the tip of his nose). He doesn't have to worry about the hood falling off, either; it's fairly tight, so he can roll, tumble, fall
and pretty much move in any way imaginable without fear of it simply falling off of his head. Of course, it can be pulled off quite easily if he wants to
display his racial identity, or if someone just gets too curious and pulls it off against his will.

It wasn't until Azarel Dray'ven came into his life that Ailles began to change. The former's adventurous spirit and jovial nature eventually inspired the latter to come out of his shell a bit. He slowly became more talkative, more confident, and more prone to leave his home whether his parents wanted him to or not. It was a positive change overall, and one that shaped the young Miraluka into the young man he is today. The problem that he once had expressing himself and communicating with others has more or less gone away completely thanks to Azarel's influence; Ailles now has a noticable personality, and it is generally considered to be a good one.
In this case, "good" entails a congenial demeanor. Thanks more to his parents than to his role model, Ailles has learned to be polite in dealing with other individuals. Granted, he's not the kindest person that one will ever meet; however, he at least refrains from intentionally insulting others, making cocky statements, or otherwise doing harm with his words. Approach him, and he'll engage in peaceful conversation for as long as it is desired/as long as he can. Ignore him, and he'll (usually) accept it in peace. For a person in his shoes, these are pretty important behaviors to have. He isn't in any position to be making demands and calling people names, after all.
Make no mistake, though; Ailles is still a pretty shy boy. He makes the general error of believing that anyone who does not speak to him does not do so out of lack of desire, even though it is generally indifference that leads to such action. For this reason, Ailles avoids speaking to strangers unless they speak to him first, thereby preventing himself from making the mistake of approaching someone who just doesn't want to see him for some reason or another. Generally, the only occasion on which this self-imposed rule is ignored is in case of emergency or an otherwise urgent situation in which immediate and rapid communication may be necessary. One cannot be concerned about rejection or humiliation when lives are at stake.
He is concerned about the lives of others, by the way. This aspect of his personality comes not from his parents, who taught him to care more for his own safety, but from his old friend Azarel, who had more than once expressed his desire to help those in need. That desire was one of the reasons that the man stuck around to aid Ailles's development, and that aspiration to be of service rubbed off on the young boy. He doesn't go crazy with it, though; you won't likely see Ailles running off on his own to fight poverty on some distant planet. But, when the opportunity to help one person or many people presents itself to the young Miraluka, chances are that he will act on it unless some sort of extenuating circumstance is preventing him from doing so.
Ailles's shyness isn't a totally bad thing as it often saves him from displaying one of his other negative traits: his naivety. Like the vast majority of Miraluka, Ailles isn't wise to the ways of the galaxy, knowing only that which was told to him by his parents, Azarel, and those who served as his instructors and guides. His time with the Jedi has been the most informative, as it wasn't until he began his tutelage under the order that he even became aware of the workings of basic forms of technology. A rudimentary knowledge of such things has been bestowed upon him, but he is far from proficient in their use at this time. Simpler things are his forte, which some consider rather sad seeing as technology is a very large part of everyday life in the galaxy.
Fortunately (or maybe not), Ailles is possessed of an inquisitive nature, prompting him to ask questions about those things which he does not understand if the circumstances are proper for him to do so. So, while he is ignorant, he doesn't possess any desire to remain ignorant. He wants to acquire knowledge, experience, and maybe a bit of wisdom in his travels: the kind of wisdom that his unofficial mentor seemed to possess. Note, however, that his desire to learn does not override his soft-spoken, reserved nature. He's no more likely to ask a question of a stranger than he is to initiate small talk with said stranger, and would rather ponder a mystery on his own than risk irritating some random fellow.
One would probably assume that a person like Ailles wouldn't handle pressure or fear very well. Such a person would be partly correct in this assumption. When the young Miraluka finds himself losing control in high-tension or dangerous situations, he has a bit of trouble staying collected and behaving appropriately. A few encouraging words or a moment to collect himself can be helpful when there's time for it; otherwise, he might get too excited and do something stupid. Being raised on Alpheridies does not prepare one for any significant danger, which is a large part of the reason that so few Miraluka choose to leave it. Ailles does have a level of bravery, though. He is brave enough to help others even if the situation is overwhelming, and he's brave enough to fight back against a malicious threat. A level of fear remains apparent nonetheless; his speech may grow shaky, and sometimes he'll instinctively shift to Miralukese if he's desperately trying to help someone.
Life and Acquisitions
Family
- Father: Jerel Konn
- Mother: Eilen Konn
- Siblings: N/A
History: Born to a run-of-the-mill Miraluka couple on the isolationist planet Alpheridies, Ailles Konn was originally destined for a dull and rather uneventful life. His parents adhered quite strictly to the old ways just like the majority of those who lived on Alpheridies. Advanced technology was quite rare; very little was used outside of the common farming tools. Women were largely subservient to their husbands, and children were expected to respect their elders unconditionally. To many species, such a lifestyle might be considered boring or just plain primitive. But, in general, it was all the Miraluka knew.
For the longest time, Ailles was no exception to this generality. His parents were strict with him, doing their best to instill in him the values and knowledge of their people. For the most part, the boy took these lessons to heart quietly. He was obedient to his parents; he didn't question their rules or defy their authority. In fact, he hardly spoke at all. He had already begun developing his current philosophy, but it was more extreme in those days. He came to view speaking at all as a chance for him to either make a fool of himself or say something that he shouldn't have said. So, rather than speaking whenever he was spoken to, he spoke only when it was truly necessary. It was pretty difficult, but it seemed like the best course of action.
Enter Azarel Dray'ven, the man that would single-handedly change the course of Ailles's life. An adventurous explorer who made it his purpose to discover and map undeveloped or unknown worlds, Azarel happened upon Alpheridies during one of his expeditions. The "strange" technology that he used, including his spacecraft and the infra-red goggles he had to use to see on the planet, generated a degree of fear in the native Miraluka, who mostly avoided contact with the man; however, it had a different effect on Ailles. For the first time, the boy went against the crowd and his superiors, his natural curiosity having been awakened by the stranger's arrival. He wanted to know about the tools the man carried and the place whence he'd come to Alpheridies.
Of course, Ailles did not immediately approach this stranger; he was far too cautious and too quiet for that sort of action. It started with a display of intention. Ailles was not the only child of his village that wanted to talk to the man. In fact, most of them would do so when they got the chance, running up to him and giving him the attention that their parents generally refused to allow him. Young Ailles was fearful though, and he simply stood back and watched from a distance. He feared that he would be regarded as unimportant and receive less attention. More than that, he feared the reaction he would receive from his parents. He just didn't have it in him to risk punishment or rejection. He didn't have it in him to approach the stranger.
Fortunately for Ailles, the stranger would take it upon himself to approach the young Miraluka. He had noticed the boy standing away from him and the group of children that would talk to him, so when the day came that only Ailles was near the man (though still standing away from him), Azarel called him over. Ailles's desire to question the man on his origin and his possessions increased after he'd finally been able to approach him, but he still carried some fear within him. Their first meeting had Ailles as the one answering all of the questions. Azarel learned the boy's name, his age, and even a few things about the Miraluka (he couldn't learn these things previously as the children that surrounded him asked all of the questions). For this, Azarel was grateful to the child, and would call him back every time that he was near.
Though there was a significant age difference between the two (Ailles was eight at the time, and Azarel was twenty-six), they slowly developed a friendship over a period of several months. Ailles would visit Azarel every day after the other children had left him, and he would answer questions for Azarel in exchange for answers to his own questions. Some of the answers were simple. Others led into lengthy stories that took up nearly all the time that the pair had to spend together before Ailles had to return to his home.
The information that Ailles received from Azarel, including some hard facts and some fantastic tales of adventure, filled his mind with dreams of the galaxy. Before the human had arrived on Alpheridies, he'd never once thought about what might exist beyond his home planet. Now, he was thinking about it almost constantly. For the first time, he imagined himself as more than just another Miraluka who would grow up to live an uneventful life on Alpheridies. For the first time, he imagined himself as a dashing space traveler known throughout the galaxy as a man of great prestige and skill. He imagined himself as something great.
Ailles expressed his desire to travel to Azarel during one of their private encounters, and it brought a smile to the explorer's face. Having come to view the Miraluka as a rather isolated people in need of contact with the rest of the galaxy, Azarel thought well of his young friend's desire to explore. He thought that Ailles's exploits might grant him knowledge and experience that he could later share with his people, though the idea of actually returning to Alpheridies hadn't entered the boy's mind at that time. He just wanted to get away from that society that was perceived as being so dull and so simple. He wanted to see the galaxy for his own sake.
The time for Azarel to leave Alpheridies drew near; since it was already inhabited, he had no need to spend an exceptionally long period mapping it (also, the natives were beginning to grow more wary of his presence). Before he left, the human man wanted to leave his young friend with something that would be useful to him if he ever decided to leave the planet. A blaster was the first thing that came to mind, but he did not feel that the child would be allowed to keep such a piece of technology among such simple people. So, Azarel chose instead to bestow upon the boy a regular longsword and several knives from his arsenal. He spent his last two weeks on the planet instructing Ailles in the use of these items, teaching him the basics so that he could continue practicing on his own. After this, Ailles and the other children that had come to respect and admire the traveling human said their goodbyes to the man, and he was on his way.
Though Azarel departed from Alpheridies, his influence was still felt in the Konn household. Originally, this influence just presented itself as a subtle change in Ailles's personality. He was more open to discussion with his parents, which allowed them to get to know him better while at the same time having to deal with more back-talk than they were accustomed to. The changes became more pronounced when Ailles entered his adolescent years. At age ten, he was no longer keen on following the rules set down for him by the society of his people. After all, famous adventurers were rebels who didn't follow any laws (or so he thought).
To some extent, it seemed as though Ailles was bipolar. At some times, he would be extremely abrasive, clashing with his parents if they so much as spoke to him. At other times, he would remain silent, but not like he was when he was younger. When he went silent, he remained that way even if he was spoken too until he just felt like talking again. His parents found it increasingly difficult to communicate with their child, as did some of the other authority figures that Ailles had to deal with.
Finally, the boy's parents caved in to their child's desires. They figured that if they just allowed him to get a glimpse of the galaxy, he would see what kind of place it was, get over himself, and consent to his quiet life on Alpheridies. They payed for public transport off of the planet and were on their way, their eyes (or lack thereof) all hidden as was the custom among traveling Miraluka. Unfortunately, they could not have been more wrong about how things would go down. Ignorant as they were, the family had no knowledge of where to go and where not to go and ended up enslaved. Ailles's parents were used as seers and fortune tellers due to their unique perception through the Force. Ailles, though he had similar abilities, was used as a delivery boy. He became known for being able to get any package to any location on foot, a significant feat considering the general reliance on technology for quick transportation. Alas, it was not the life he wanted to live; it was not the way he wanted to see the galaxy. Things only got worse when the owner of the three Miraluka sold each off to a different owner, separating the young boy from his parents. It was the last time he ever saw them.
Ailles remained a slave until he was twelve years old, though
he now lived on a planet where slavery was quite illegal. His new owner feigned kindness to his slaves in public to hide the truth, treating them as employees
and pretending to offer them pay. Ailles never kept any credits to himself, however, as the man cruelly withdrew them behind closed doors. Fortune seemed to
finally favor when he was required to make a delivery to a rather strange individual who had heard about his unique method of getting around. This individual,
who turned out to be a member of the Jedi Order, discovered Ailles's Force-sensitivity and wished to take the boy away for training in the Jedi way. The
Jedi followed the boy back to his "employer," and after some quiet negotiations and a minor exchange of credits, Ailles was a student of the Order
based in the temple on Coruscant.
The boy's training had rather mixed results. He was found over time to be very strong in the Force, and that coupled with what he'd already learned
and naturally knew as a Miraluka allowed him to grasp new concepts of the Force with relative ease. In spite of this, he did not quickly draw the attention of
anyone to train him. His time in slavery had taught him once again to be as silent as possible so as not to agitate others, and any attempt to strike up a
conversation with him was generally a failure. His habit of giving the shortest answers possible caused his peers and some of his instructors to think of him
as standoffish and pompous when he was in fact infinitely humble. Thus, he was often passed over for more intensive training in favor of some of the more
well-known and outgoing Initiates.
Ailles had been in training for two years when the Sith returned and made their attacks on Republic and Jedi strongholds. This marked the boy's first
face-to-face encounter with the dark side of the Force, for he was attacked by one of the invading Sith. He managed to actually hold his own for a time, going
approximately five minutes before the tables turned against him. The threat of death was quickly staring him in the face, and he began to panic and get
sloppier and sloppier. If not for the timely intervention of one of the temple Masters, Ailles would have lost his life. Fortunately, he was saved and sent
after a Knight who lead him and a number of other Initiates to safety. They left, they hid, and they waited out the attack.
Another two years has passed since that time. The Miraluka boy has grown in skill, knowledge, and size, but not in sociability; he is still regularly alone,
even when he does not want to be. Still, in spite of his failed social life and the dangers he has thus far faced, his gratefulness to the Jedi Order for
saving him from slavery is boundless. He continues to train and study loyally in the hopes that someday soon, he will finally have a master to instruct him
more closely.
Abilities
- Strong in the Force--Anything involving the Force comes naturally to Ailles. He is strong in the Force even among Miraluka, and he benefits from an inherent mastery of Force Sight and a strong grasp of the most basic applications of the Force such as Telekinesis and Persuasion. With a proper teacher, he has the potential to become a great Jedi.
- Bidellaved--A method of movement developed by Ailles during his time as a slave. In truth, it is just an application of Force-enhanced movement, combining the luck of a Force-sensitive with mildly enhanced leaps, swings, and flips. Its purpose is to get the user over, under, past, around, or through any given obstacle as quickly and efficiently as possible. If desired, it can be made to look quite flashy through the use of often superfluous acrobatics (Note: essentially, this is a Star Wars equivalent of parkour + free-running that I have given a name).
- Bilingual--Ailles is capable of speaking both Galactic Basic and Miralukese.
- Lightsaber Combat--Ailles is not an outstanding lightsaber combatant, but he has been taught the basics and a few intermediate skills in his time as an Initiate. Like all Initiates, he was first instructed in the basics of Form I: Shii-Cho, but his acrobatic, Force-enhanced style of fighting most resembles Form IV: Ataru at this point; however, it is quite unrefined due to a lack of more personal instruction.
Weaknesses
- Technology--Because he originates from a more-or-less agrarian society, Ailles lacks experience with basic forms of technology that can be found in the galaxy. He cannot pilot a ship of any kind, and concepts such as cloning, cybernetics, and droid construction and maintenance are beyond his comprehension. The Jedi have taught him some basic uses of computers, and he can sometimes get by on Force-based instinct; however, he is ultimately inept when it comes to science and technology.
- Naivety--The same origin that has caused Ailles's lack of technological knowledge and skill has also resulted in this trait. While he is by no means a total idiot, he generally believes what he is told about most subjects since he often does not know any better. His Force Sight usually allows him to see through Force-based deception or persuasion, but anyone with an honest face who can twist words and lie without flinching (or while flinching only a little) can probably fool Ailles.
- Sociability--Ailles, though polite and amicable, has never been very good at making friends, forming bonds, or even keeping a conversation going. Because of this, he lacks both basic people skills and leadership skills, making him unfit for any task that might require him to coordinate any number of individuals. He also suffers from a lack of people to share his thoughts and emotions with, forcing him to learn to bottle all such things up with the potential for a future explosion of emotion, a dangerous thing for any Force user.
- Pressure--Ailles has not learned to be infinitely calm and collected as most Jedi are, so his emotions can still get the better of him if he loses control of a situation. While this might be dangerous to others in the future if he does not learn to keep control over himself, it is currently only dangerous to him; it often results in hasty decisions or sloppy moves that threaten his person. Should anyone be relying on him for advisement or leadership (a mistake by itself at this point), they, too, would suffer from his loss of composure.
Possessions
- Azarel's Sword-- A regular longsword given to Ailles by an old friend. It is in very good condition not because of exceptional craftsmanship, but because it is so rarely used. He practiced using it frequently before leaving his planet, and has managed to retain it throughout his time as a slave. He no longer uses it, but he does keep it in his quarters in the Jedi Temple to remind himself why he left.
- Initiate Lightsaber--The lightsaber of one who has yet to build his own. It is less powerful than an actual lightsaber, capable of causing third-degree burns on contact, but incapable of severing limbs or piercing objects as easily as a regular lightsaber. Ailles's training lightsaber is colored green.
- Throwing Knives--Also given to Ailles by his friend, these knives are meant to be thrown and lodged in their target, hopefully fatally. Naturally, he does not get much use out of them living at the Jedi Temple, but would carry and, if necessary, use them were he to go on a mission.
- Travel Sack--The one thing that Ailles parents bestowed upon him for his benefit, this travel bag is capable of carrying a small number of items at any given time. It is mostly used for carrying the necessities such as food and containers of water.
